ON THE PROCESS OF THE ESTABLİSHMENT OF SELJUK DOMİNATİON İN MARAŞ AND AROUND
Abstract
Maraş and around is located on an important trade route that connects Anatolia to Mesopotamia and has military-strategic location, throughout history took place at target of many states. Islam forward operation when reaches to Anatolia, Maraş was seized by Hâlid b. Velid in 637/638, although it got out of hand as a result of Byzantine attacks from time to time remaind under the rule of Muslims for a long time. Maraş and around was seized by Byzantine Empire in 962 therefore in the era of Turkmen raids the city was under the domination of Byzantium.
After the battle of Mantzikert in which Seljuk Sultan Alp Arslan won a victory against Byzantine Emperor Romanos IV Diogenes in Maraş and around Armenian Philaretos Brakhamios reigned for a while. For this reason, during the first Crusade, the Crusaders have been effective in Maraş and its environment.
In this paper we will evaluate the process of the establishment of Seljuk domination in Maraş and around which began at the time of Seljuk Sultan Suleymanşah.
